Wahoo vs Lincoln Pius X

Wahoo was the number one seed in the Class B5 District Tournament and was a definite favorite to defeat Lincoln Pius X and advance to the state tournament for the fifth consecutive year. But Lincoln Pius X’s 9 – 16 record was somewhat deceiving as their schedule included eleven Class A teams. And the Thunderbolts were highly motivated. A win over Wahoo was their only chance for a ticket to state. Wahoo, being one of the top five teams in NSAA point standings would have a shot at the wildcard birth to state even with a loss. Pius pulled off the upset, downing the Warriors 67 – 53.

There were two deciding factors to the game. The first came two minutes into the first quarter when Wahoo’s leading scorer and rebounder, Cody Hesser, came down hard on an attempted rebound and was injured. Although the senior tried to play in the second quarter, it was obvious he was only half speed and he was out the rest of the game.
The second factor was rebounding – and Hesser’s absence certainly hurt Wahoo’s efforts on the boards. The Bolts out-rebounded Wahoo 30 – 16, with 9 of their rebounds being offensive rebounds. Four times during the game Pius scored putbacks off of those rebounds.

Wahoo’s only lead of the game came with 2:45 to go in the first quarter when Jase Kaminski swished a jumpshot to put the Warriors up 10-8. But the Bolts’ Zach Taubenheim answered with a jumpshot and a three-pointer to put Pius back on top 13 – 10. A Quincy Gigstad drive on an assist from Kaminski cut the lead to one. As the horn went off to end the quarter Pius’ Charie Morrow drove the right side of the lane, leaped in the air and scooped the ball to the basket as he was bumped and fell to the floor. The ball went in and Morrow converted the free throw. Pius had scored the last five points of the quarter and led 18 – 12.

A Joey Kelly two and a Kaminski three pulled Wahoo to within one to start the second period. But that’s as close as the Warriors got as the Bolts stayed ahead and Morrow again scored on a drive at the buzzer to give Pius a 29 – 22 lead at the end of the half.

Wahoo started the second half well as Kip Brigham drove to the basket for a two-pointer and Landon Glock connected on a three to narrow the Pius lead to two. Leading by 3 at the 5:49 mark, Morrow hit a three and then Taubenheim sank a three to expand the Bolt lead to 39 – 30. Once again, Morrow connected at the end of the quarter, this time hitting a three-pointer to put Pius ahead 50 – 34.

The closest Wahoo would come in the fourth quarter was at the 3:10 mark after Glock scored on a three-pointer and a jumpshot to narrow the gap to 61 – 49. But Pius converted enough free throws at the end to keep Wahoo at bay.

Leading scorers for Wahoo were Glock with 10 and Kaminski with 17. Pius was led by Morrow with 21, and Taubenheim with 19, including four three-pointers. Taubenheim also collected 11 rebounds, 4 offensive.

Pius advances to the state tournament as the #8 seed and will play the #1 seed, Omaha Skutt Catholic. Wahoo qualified as a wildcard and will be the #5 seed and will play Elkhorn North.
